Meet The Family

Please take time to meet some of our family members.

Aidan Black

I am Aidan. I am 28 years old and have severe global developmental delay and autism. I came to St Julians Baptist Church when I was ten years old. I used to wander around a lot and had special help in Sunday School. We have several people in our church who work with or care for children or adults with special needs. I still wander a bit but am safe and no one worries. I like taking part in services. Sometimes I do a reading or a talk about my soft toys or lead in saying the grace or help serve communion.  I was baptised in the church and became a church member. I like communion and going to our worship evenings. I help my Dad when he preaches at other churches.

Recently Aidan wanted to share in his own words how he felt about church. He wrote the words below without any help and said them at the front on Oct 1 2023. The pastor prayed for him afterwards

"I came to St Julians in the past where I started to follow God. I just want to worship the Lord on a Sunday. I have been baptised a few years ago. I love to sing his praise and worship out loud and for the church to hear me reading from the bible"

Jadon is 19 years old and has developmental delay and autism. Jadon joined the church with his parents and is an active member of the church. He loves to welcome people and enjoys conversation although his language skills are very limited. Jadon has a gift for giving "timely hugs" and is a great encourager to everyone in our family. Jadon can say the last word of each sentence of the Lords Prayer which is really amazing to hear. Jadon will often contribute to the meeting with a "Yes" "Amen" and sometimes "Hallelujah".

New to Church?

It's important for us to tell you that "the Church" is not a building. The building is the place where "the Church" also called "the family of God" meet to be together as often as we can.

So welcome! Whether you've just moved to the area, or have lived here all your life, we hope our website helps you to find out everything you want to know about our Church Family that meets in St Julians and across the City of Newport.

Key information about the church...

Where & when does the church meet?

We believe that when we meet each other, in homes or in any other location we are the Church gathered. Our regular and largest gathering of the Church Family meets every Sunday at 10.30am for our Sunday Service. Aim to arrive 15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking spot and seat in time for the service to start. Its also good to meet and greet others before the service starts. We want to get to know you and introduce ourselves to you.

We meet at:

33 Beaufort Road
St. Julians
Newport
NP19 7PZ

You can see a map on our contact us page

What should I expect when I visit the church?

You will receive a very warm welcome particularly from our Welcome Team who will be able to answer your questions and ensure you feel comfortable. We don't want you to disappear in the crowd so don't be surprised if people introduce themselves to you and please make yourself known to others. There will be a time of singing with opportunity for church members to minister to each other, to pray or read a passage from the bible. After some notices there will be a message from one of the church members with a chance to respond at the end of the service. We encourage church members to participate during the meeting but everyone is able to relax and enjoy our time together.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are served after the service where there is plenty of time to meet new people and ask more questions.

What happens to the kids at church?

We have a fantastic programme for the kids at the Church for:

IMG-20231008-WA0042

Junior Church - Primary School Age
Youth Church - Secondary School Age

Our Junior and Youth Church caters for those with "Special Educational Needs" and this means a child may be more suited to a group based on ability / understanding, rather than age.

Children stay with their parents at the start of the service as we worship (sing songs!) together for the first part of the morning. Someone will announce when the children need to go to their groups.

For more information about what happens in the children's groups please visit the relevant age groups for you under church life.

Is there a dress code?

We don't have a dress code. Just come dressed in what makes you feel comfortable.

Will I have to join in?

Not at all! You are free to simply observe or participate as much as feels comfortable for you.

Disability Special Needs

Our church has members who bring beauty and love to the church family out of their disability and they are highly valued in our family. We've found that God loves to use us when we least expect it and especially when we are not so strong in areas of our lives. We also have children and young people with special needs that bring a completely different dynamic to our gatherings. We understand that they can sometimes be noisy, say things that don't seem to fit and now and again have a melt down. More importantly we know through experience that we gain abundant grace, love and growth in our walk with Jesus by having our "special" family members with us. ...........        A special message to carers - We know that you may not have been to church for some time because of the challenges of the caring role. We want you to know, that we will do all we can, to make you welcome along with those you care for. If you are concerned about visiting and would like to talk to one of our members then please give "Mark" a call on 07841376410. Mark and his wife Natalie are carers for their son Jadon who is 19 years old and has autism (low spectrum) and learning difficulties. Jadon displays some challenging behaviours so they are in a good place to encourage you to spend time with us on Sundays and through the week.
